KT's Con 2012 Report - Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor

ImageOkay, a few corrections from my prior posts, with thanks to the folks who passed this info on to me: I said, “She said something about there being a picture of one little red shoe on the ground and she immediately said, “Oh, that’s too small!” (to be mine). Actually, she was looking out into the crowd and was saying that at the moment about the first shoe that was held up. Which was, cool enough, a little child sized version of the ruby slippers Dorothy in Oz wore. And which became one of the pairs of shoes donated to the homeless.

I said, “Someone asked something like even though Lucy is now a star herself, does she feel like she’s one when she meets other stars. (Something along that line.) Lucy said she’s still excited about meeting some stars. She said, “Neil Patrick Harris, Colin Firth”

A friend wrote that she remembered the question more as something like does she ever get fangirlish over any stars even though she is a star. And are there any stars that she wants to meet. She did mention Neil Patrick Harris and Colin Firth and then added that Neil was a friend of a friend and she still hasn't met him.

The same friend said that she thinks Lucy was talking about Madonna as being able to sniff out the heterosexual dude in a crowd. And then she informed me that Brittney’s bra brought in $6,000 for charity. Whoot!

Okay—Lucy and Renee:

A fan said, “We need to find a way to get Renee on the show” (Spartacus). (Not sure which “we” she was talking about--she didn’t seem to have someone with her at the mike. Perhaps she meant she, Lucy and Renee; or she, Lucy, Renee and the Xena fan base, or she and the whole wide world at large?)

Daily News TV Spotlight Lucy Lawless And Her Music 11 February 2012

The Daily News newspaper in the US has a supplement called TV Spotlight which featured a Q&A about Lucy's singing abilities. Check out the response below.

Q: Is it true that Lucy Lawless put out a music album?

Image

A: Not exactly. Lucy Lawless, best known to most as the warrior princess Xena in the cleverly titled cult classic series "Xena: warrior Princess," has released a recording of a live concert she performed at L.A.'s famed Roxy Theater, and an EP (mini-album) with five tracks, three of which are just remixes of the first.

However, Lawless is certainly aware of her physical appeal, which undeniably aided in the success of her TV show (which featured her jumping around in the tightest, skimpiest battle Armour ever worn by a warrior princess). Perhaps that's why, though she's released just two audio recordings, she's released multiple live-concert DVDS, including two filmed at the aforementioned Roxy.

She also contributed a song to the 2006 CD "Unexpected Dreams: Songs From the Stars," a compilation of lullabies performed by various film and TV stars. Other contributors include Scarlett Johansson, Ewan Mcgregor and "Desperate Housewives" star Teri Hatcher.

As is the case with most actors who can sing, Lawless appeared in a Broadway run of "Grease," playing Rizzo. Her appearance earned a fair bit of press -- "Xena" was nearing its popularity peak at the time -and so this was most people's introduction to Lawless's musical bent.

But despite all this she hasn't abandoned her TV fans. Indeed, her current series, Starz's "Spartacus," has a lot in common with "Xena: warrior Princess." Both are factually loose, racy portrayals of classical eras -- with "Spartacus," she's moved forward in time from ancient Greece to slightly less-ancient Rome.

The second season of "Spartacus" premiered on Jan. 27, and the series has already received a green light for a third season.

Will There Be A Xena Movie? New Lucy Interview with Huffington Post 9 February 2012

Image

Lucy was interviewed recently by the Huffington Post and was asked if there would be a Xena Movie...

Is there any chance we'll see some kind of "Xena" reunion or movie?

That would have been really fun ... The whole trouble with it was there was some sort of glitch in the paperwork in ownership. The movie company doesn't own all the rights to it and they don't want to share, so -- it's just kind of gone sour for all these years. I shouldn't say they don't want to share, but there's not enough in it for them if they have to share the rights with somebody else. By the time somebody realizes it's a completely wasted franchise and they should reinvigorate it, I'm too old to play her.

No Goodbyes...Just Good Memories 2012 Xena Convention Final Report

Yes I have plagerised Star Trek's Tasha Yar. I love that holodeck eulogy so I'm using it (since my fandoms collided at the con..might as well go with the theme)

The 2012 Xena Convention is over and it was my final convention despite what Creation may or may not do next year. I suspect this the last convention for many other folks judging by the chatter.

Here are the photos from the final day

Image-25On stage yesterday afternoon, Renee started the proceedings by being funny, cheeky, just beautiful. She chatted with us and shows us her 5 Ways to Break Up which was funny. Renee talked about how her life has changed and that fans were with her all the step of the way; her marriage, the birth of her children, her divorce, her re-marriage and her projects.

Image-26We then had Lucy come on stage with a giant flower on her jacket. She was fabulous; energetic and just plain funny.

Sharon set Lucy up by asking her about the OccupyOakland "arrest" and asked her how it came about, what she did and so forth. This was the cue for Angela from the Official Lucy Lawless Fan Club to stand up at the back and yell out "I got your shoe!" and then another 4 people (chosen earlier) to stand up and say "I got your shoe!" and then everyone who had prepared and had shoes all stood up yelling "I got your shoe!" :) THAT was funny. The shoes were donated to a homeless shelter which was mega cool.

Image-27At one point a "fan" kept at her about Roman history that we all groaned that a con virgin was taking the scenic route to her question. We had alot of con virgins in the audience and they were so cute.

Back to the persistent con virgin we realised (after Lucy figured it out after a lengthy question) that it was Ellen Hollman from Spartacus Vengeance.

I recently interviewed Ellen for the AUSXIP Interviews Spartacus series of interviews. It was cool to see her there. The interview will be up soon.

Ellen will soon be seen as Saxa, the new female warrior / gladiator

Image-31-smallRenee soon joined Lucy back on stage and they answered some questions before someone convinced them both that they should do the Gabrielle proposing to Xena bit of Katherine's play. Lucy had NO IDEA what was going on but she did it with Renee (Renee had performed this the previous day as Gabrielle so this wasn't new to her). It was funny! Lucy adlibbed and made really funny comments.

So Gabrielle (Renee) gets to the part about "will you marry me" - Lucy makes a face and then does something all the subtexters (really do I need to use that word anymore? ah well) have been waiting for. Let the pictures speak for themselves

AFter that wonderful moment, our dynamic duo said goodbye...and thus ended The Final Journey Convention

One last thing to do and that was Lucy's Photo Op. The line stretched outside the building - there was well over 250 people who were lined up and they got their wish.

I said farewell to my friends I have met and loved throughout the years. I did not say goodbye; just farewell until we meet again. When? I have no idea but it will happen.

so I'm going to end this blog with Tasha's words:

No goodbyes...just good memories.

Hailing Frequencies Closed & Battle ON!

Uncovering Hollywood's Secret Irish Heritage - Irish Independent 27 December 2011

The Ireland based Irish Independent newspaper has an article tracing the roots of Hollywood celebrities. Listed amost the actors with an Irish heritage is Lucy.

ImageUncovering Hollywood?s secret Irish heritage
Irish Independent 27 December 2011

While some celebrities find it difficult to hide their Irish heritage behind their red hair and freckles, the Celtic ancestry of others, like George Clooney, is a little harder to hone in on. Indeed, it is surprising how many un-irish celebrities actually have Irish roots.

Xena: Warrior Princess

Lucy Lawless, who played the sexy and strong warrior in the hit TV show, may be the most famous actress from New Zealand to ever swing a sword, but she is also the daughter of the unmistakably Irish couple Frank and Julie Ryan.

Xena Mention In AfterEllen Article Does Lesbian Subtext Still Matter

Image

AfterEllen.com explores if there is a need for lesbian subtext in shows such as Rizzoli & Isles and other shows. Naturally Xena was mentioned since you can't talk about subtext without talking about Xena and her relationship with Gabrielle which has sparked thousands of subtext fanfic for over 15 years.

Here's an excerpt from the article:

It's been over a decade since Xena ushered in the golden age of lesbian subtext. For six seasons between 1995 and 2001, the show's writers danced around the issue of the Warrior Princess' relationship with Gabrielle. Perpetual innuendo, running jokes and subtle references to Xena and Gabby's sexuality permeated the plot and dialogue. And though Lucy Lawless is on record as calling the couple "married," the show's creative team never offered up a definitive answer about their relationship.

Xena and Spartacus Connection In The Movie Colombiana

Well this is interesting and it shows the writers of the film Colombiana are obvious Xena fans who didn't do their homework. Roland sent in the following note:

xenaI watched Colombiana the other day and there was a Xena mention in it! I thought it might interest you! They even showed a Xena Comic book (the lead character - Zoe Saldana - wanted to be like Xena when she was little). They made a mistake though! Because the scene was in 1992 and we didn't have Xena in '92...

and the Spartacus connection? Well Cynthia Addai-Robinson who plays the new Naevia is in this movie. Roland continues...

Also, Cynthia Addai-Robinson is in this movie, she's playing the little girl's mother!

Fandoms colliding in a funny way. Also the film review from macguffinpodcast.com picked up on the Xena connection:

The character Xena, Warrior Princess, first appeared on the television show Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, in an episode that aired on March 13, 1995. I?m mentioning this bit of TV trivia because while watching the opening minutes of director Olivier Megaton?s new film Colombiana, I was baffled at how our young heroine, at the age of nine in a scene clearly stated to be set in 1992, could be reading a Xena comic book, and proclaiming that she would like to be like Xena. It bothered me enough that I even indulged in a moment of obnoxiousness, leaning over to my viewing companion to state for the record that Xena wouldn?t have been around until 1995.
